The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) was first established with the formation of the Department of Fisheries within the Faculty of Animal Husbandry through the Rector’s Decision of Diponegoro University No. 44 of 1968 dated October 8, 1968. In August 1978, the faculty’s name was changed to the Faculty of Animal Science and Fisheries based on Rector’s Decision No. 76/SK/UD/VI/1978 of the University of Diponegoro. However, its name was changed back to the Faculty of Animal Science in 1985 pursuant to Presidential Decree No. 51/1982. Based on the Circular Letter of the Directorate General of Higher Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 1023/D/Q/1985 dated June 6, 1985, the Marine Science Program was established at the University of Diponegoro along with five other Indonesian universities (Bogor Agricultural University, Pattimura University, Sam Ratulangi University, Hasanuddin University, and Riau University).

In subsequent developments, UNDIP obtained the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 54/Dikti/Kep/1987, which was revised in 1988 with the Decree of the Directorate of Higher Education No. 24/Dikti/Kep/1988, regarding the Establishment of the Marine Science Program at UNDIP, where the administrative management of the teaching staff was under the Faculty of Animal Science, while the academic aspects were coordinated between the Rector and the Executive Board of the Marine Science Program. In 1994, the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) was established in accordance with the Decision of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 0181/0/1994, dated July 25, 1994, consisting of two departments: the Department of Fisheries and the Department of Marine Sciences.
